Chapter Twelve

Meg was furious as she watched Roderick charge down the road and spoil all her plans. Although it would hardly ruin her, she had paid a fair bit of money to hire all these men, and she liked to get her money’s worth. And here was damned Roderick, exploding out of nowhere to ruin everything.

Poor Glover would be superfluous. And Roderick, not Glover, would be the hero to the girl. Exactly what Meg did not want. It took Roderick mere moments to extract Helen, and not because Meg’s men gave in. They knew he was the wrong rescuer because he was not on foot. But he set about them from his horse, snatched the girl from their clutches, and rode off with her behind him in the saddle.

Unwillingly, Meg admired his audacity and efficiency. He had freed the carriage and Helen in one charge and left the man who should have been the savior of the day running uselessly late.

She got back in her carriage. “Drive to the theater,” she instructed the coachman.

“But ma’am, all that disturbance—”

“What disturbance?” she said wryly, for shadows were already running past her and melting into the opposite side streets. “We must rescue Mr. Glover.” Since there was no one else left to save.

Glover was discovered talking to two strangers outside the theater, with no other threat in sight. Roderick, his charger, and his maiden were nowhere to be seen.

“Thanks for your help, sir,” one of the strangers was saying as Meg stepped down from the carriage unaided. Glover did not even appear to be aware of her. “But don’t you worry about the young lady. The major has her safe now.”

Meg intervened. “Are we to take it, then, that you know the man who rode off with the young lady?”

“Yes, ma’am. Our employer.”

Well. The little girls had hired guards. She had never imagined they would be so sensible. At least it meant there was a reason Roderick had been hanging about.

The guard who had spoken bowed and presented her with a business card. “If you ever have need of us, ma’am. Excuse us. Got to get back to the others.”

They strode back inside the theater, where the nervous manager awaited them.

“Come,” Meg said to Glover. “The carriage will take me home and then return you to Braithwaite Castle.”

“But what of Lady Helen?”

She had already climbed inside, so he was forced to join her to talk. “Presumably Major Vale will take her safely home.”

He glowered at her. “I did not know you were arranging anything so dangerous.”

“My dear sir,” she drawled, “there is no point in rescuing her from a situation that is not dangerous. Rest assured, our rioters were well paid to drop her in terror as soon as you appeared.”

“So we frightened the wits out of the poor girl for nothing.”

Meg did not like to have failure cast in her face. “Oh, cheer up, Mr. Glover. All is not yet lost. You saw both young ladies at the theater. You saw one
